Resource: Creative New Zealand

A national funder and advocate for the arts in New Zealand

Creative New Zealand is an organisation best known for distributing arts funding.

The organisation is also a policy advocate for the arts and promotes New Zealand art internationally.

However, most interest to an emerging producer is their mandate to build capability in the New Zealand arts industry.

I want to highlight a few of the educational resources they offer and outline the funding support you may access.

Education

Creative New Zealand offers access to online training videos via their Youtube channel. I would like to point out two playlists in particular as useful for emerging producers.

The first is a guide to their funding. This includes how to make an application and the basics of budgets. It is worth looking at even if you are not applying to them for funding. Their explanations of how to approach an application are clear and useful.

The second is a playlist that takes an in-depth look at optimising your online marketing. There is a lot of information to work through, and some may be more relevant to large companies, but I recommend taking a look.

Creative New Zealand also has a huge archive of research and reports. These can offer insights about your potential audience and are worth taking the time to look at.

Funding

The funding that is on offer covers a broad range of arts activities. It ranges from community initiatives to professional projects. The best thing to do if you are looking for funding in New Zealand is to visit the website and look at the possibilities. I would also suggest that you make time to speak to someone at your local office and ask them about the best path forward. They also maintain a list of other funders in New Zealand.

Finally, I suggest that you take the time to look at the reports that detail who was funded. You can learn a lot about the organisational priories of CNZ by looking at the projects and what they applied for.
